Sherry Nicole (Nicky) DeFreece Emery has 16 years of experience as an architectural conservator and 20 years of experience as an architectural historian in architecture and engineering firms. She is also a licensed architect. Her research and architectural conservation fieldwork include the early American architecture of the Northeast, West, Southwest, South, and Midwest. She has extensive architectural conservation, conditions assessment, research, and documentation experience, including the preparation of historic structures reports. Ms. Emery has participated in several important documentation and conservation fieldwork projects, including National Historic Landmarks, two Save America’s Treasures sites, and one World Monuments Fund Watch site. Ms. Emery has conducted laboratory research on architectural materials, specifically regarding the depth and severity of salt damage to porous masonry substrates. Her field experience includes masonry, finishes, and plaster conservation; as well as conservation of public art of various media including masonry, concrete, metals, and architectural coatings. Ms. Emery has a particular interest in the concept of integrating architectural conservation and historic preservation with sustainable practices. Ms. Emery’s architectural and architectural history experience includes research, documentation, assessment, and site analysis of existing buildings; design and adaptive use of historic structures; historic building and site preservation plans; historic contexts; writing and submitting National Park Service-approved National Register of Historic Places nominations; and Federal environmental compliance documents. Ms. Emery meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for History, Architectural History, Architecture, and Historic Architecture. She also meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Proposed Historic Preservation Professional Qualification Standards for Conservation. Ms. Emery opened Adapt/re:Adapt Preservation and Conservation in 2014.
